It is the resting place of 9,387 U.S. soldiers, most of whom perished during the Normandy Landings, and features the Wall of the Missing with the names of 1,557 soldiers unaccounted for. The cliffs leading to the beaches contain remnants of German defenses, including concrete casemates with memorials.
