- Somme - This is a commemorative circuit of the 1916 Battles of The Somme. Due to the static nature of this war, many sites have been preserved: the largest and deepest mine crater in France, the iconic monument to the missing at Thiepval, the site of the first tank battles on Earth at Flers, and the completely intact battlefield at Beaumont-Hamel. Visitors can walk with a licensed guide through the trenches and onto no-man’s-land, and enjoy refreshments at a café with trenches in the back garden. The beautifully maintained cemeteries (over 200 on The Somme) add to the experience, all while passing through stunning landscapes and charming villages. For Australians (and others), Villers-Bretonneux holds four significant sites for those whose ancestors served in the ANZAC forces.
- Lochnagar Crater - The largest mine crater in France, created by a massive explosion detonated at 07:30 on July 1st, 1916.
- Auchonvillers - An excellent spot for refreshments, featuring a café with original WW1 trenches in the back garden. It houses a wealth of WW1 memorabilia and a small, yet beautifully presented museum (included).
- Ulster Memorial Tower & Thiepval Wood - The tower is a replica of Helen’s Tower in County Down, Northern Ireland, where soldiers of the British 16th division trained before participating in the Battles of The Somme. The assault on the German positions here claimed many Irish lives.
- Pozieres - Mémorial de Pozières, 80300 Pozières, France. The monument to the first tank battles on Earth showcases the different types of tanks used. Across the road from the monument is the site of a windmill, destroyed during the WW1 battles. Approximately 2000 Australian soldiers lost their lives here.
- Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial - A preserved battlefield where visitors can walk in the trenches and across no-man’s-land, following in the footsteps of the soldiers from July 1st, 1916.
