A Day in Roatan: From Sloths to Snorkeling

Roatan has always been a name whispered among travelers as a hidden gem in the Caribbean. Our first stop was Daniel Johnson’s Monkey & Sloth Hangout, a sanctuary that felt like stepping into a whimsical world where monkeys swung from branches and sloths lounged lazily in the trees.

Our guide at the sanctuary was a fountain of knowledge, introducing us to the playful antics of the monkeys and the serene nature of the sloths. I found myself captivated by the sloths’ slow-motion movements and the monkeys’ cheeky curiosity. Feeding the vibrant birds added a splash of color to the experience, making it a delightful start to the day.

Drifting Through an Underwater Wonderland

After bidding farewell to our furry friends, we headed to the snorkel dock, where the real adventure awaited. Roatan Ocean Adventures, a family-run business, greeted us with warm smiles and a sense of camaraderie. The boat ride to the snorkeling site was short but filled with anticipation as we approached a small shipwreck, now a thriving reef.

Equipped with snorkel gear and a few tips from our guide, we slipped into the water. The gentle current carried us over a kaleidoscope of coral and fish, each more vibrant than the last. It was as if I had entered a living aquarium, with schools of fish darting around and a graceful stingray gliding beneath us. The experience was both exhilarating and calming, a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.

Relaxing on Big French Key

The day concluded with a visit to Big French Key, a small beach club that felt like a slice of paradise. With its pristine beaches and inviting loungers, it was the ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploration. I indulged in some delicious shrimp while soaking in the breathtaking views of Roatan’s coastline.

As the sun began to set, our boat returned to whisk us back to the port, with Norma ensuring we had a smooth journey back. Reflecting on the day’s adventures, I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the island’s natural beauty and the warmth of its people. Roatan had indeed captured my heart, and I knew this wouldn’t be my last visit.
