Exploring Portugal’s Spiritual and Scenic Wonders with the Family
When I heard about the “Visit to the Shrine of Fatima and More,” I knew it was the perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure for my family. Join me as I recount our unforgettable journey through Portugal’s spiritual and scenic wonders.
A Spiritual Start in Fátima and Valinhos
Our journey began in the serene and spiritual heart of Portugal, Fátima. As a family, we have always cherished experiences that offer both education and inspiration, and Fátima did not disappoint. The site of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1917, Fátima is a place of deep faith and pilgrimage. Walking through the Chapel of Apparitions and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, I could see the awe in my children’s eyes as they absorbed the stories of the three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta. Our guide, João, was exceptional in bringing these stories to life, making history tangible and engaging for the kids.
Just a short drive away, we visited Valinhos, the quaint village where the children lived. It was a step back in time, and João’s storytelling made it easy for us to imagine the simple, pastoral life of the early 20th century. The kids were particularly fascinated by the idea of shepherding and the rural lifestyle, which sparked a lively discussion about how different life is today.
Waves and Wonders in Nazaré
After a morning steeped in history and spirituality, we headed to the coastal town of Nazaré. Known for its giant waves, Nazaré is a place where nature’s power is on full display. As we stood on the cliffs, watching the waves crash below, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. João explained the phenomenon of the Nazaré Canyon, which creates these massive waves, and even shared stories of surfers who have braved them. My eldest, an aspiring surfer, was particularly captivated and spent the rest of the day dreaming of riding those waves.
We also took a moment to explore the traditional fishing village, where the kids were delighted to see fish drying on the beach and the local women in their “seven skirts.” It was a vibrant slice of Portuguese culture that added a colorful layer to our adventure.
Medieval Magic in Óbidos
Our final stop was the enchanting medieval village of Óbidos. Walking through the cobblestone streets, surrounded by ancient walls, felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The kids were thrilled to explore the castle and imagine themselves as knights and princesses. João’s knowledge of the village’s history, from its Templar roots to its role as a royal wedding gift, added depth to our exploration.
Before leaving, we indulged in a taste of the local liqueur, Ginjinha, a sweet cherry brandy that even the adults found delightful. It was the perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Portugal while reflecting on the rich tapestry of experiences we had woven together.
This journey was more than just a tour; it was a day of learning, laughter, and connection. João’s expertise and warmth made it unforgettable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this adventure to any family visiting Portugal. Explore Fátima and Beyond
