- Dazaifu Tenmangu - Dazaifu Tenmangu is the principal shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the revered god of learning. It stands as the foremost among approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan and is the largest in Kyushu.
In addition to the striking vermilion main hall and its surrounding gardens, Dazaifu Tenmangu boasts numerous historical structures, including the Tenkai Inari Shrine, Treasure Hall, and Sugawara History Museum.
Japanese students frequently visit the shrine before exams to seek blessings for success and a smooth academic journey.
The approach road to Dazaifu is lined with popular snack and gift shops, all worth exploring. A must-try is the “ume mochi,” known for its sticky outer layer and sweet red bean filling, which is delightful without being overly rich.
- Nyoirinji Temple - Known as the Nyoirinji Frog Temple, this site is renowned for the soothing sound of wind chimes carrying wishes throughout the temple grounds.
Nyoirinji Temple, believed to have been established by the esteemed monk Gyoki during the Nara period, enshrines the Nyoirin Kannon and is a designated cultural property in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Affectionately called the “Frog Temple,” Nyoirinji offers stunning seasonal views, including cherry blossoms and hydrangeas in spring, vibrant maple leaves in autumn, and lush greenery in summer.
In summer, the temple is adorned with thousands of wind chimes, each carrying a wish for a safe season. The cool sound of the chimes provides a refreshing escape from the summer heat.
※ Each wind chime is available for purchase at 500 yen. Visitors are encouraged to write their wishes and offer them at the temple.
- Yufuin Onsen - Yufuin Onsen is a beloved destination, especially among Japanese women, known for its tranquil and gentle ambiance, nestled amidst mountains.
Visitors can indulge in the scenic beauty while enjoying delightful culinary experiences, creating a sense of complete happiness.
The “sightseeing carriage” in Yufuin Onsen, a popular attraction for over 30 years, begins at JR Yufuin Station, passes Fuzan-ji Temple and Unagi Hime Shrine, and returns to the station.
Yunotsubo Street, located at the base of Yufudake, is bustling with souvenir shops offering Oita specialties like yuzu pepper and eateries serving local dishes such as fried chicken tempura.
- Lake Kinrin - In spring, the cherry blossoms along the Oita River bloom magnificently. Under the clear blue sky and white clouds, with Yufudake as a backdrop, the light pink cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers create a stunningly colorful spring landscape.
