Takachiho is the setting for one of the most significant and famous legends in Japanese mythology. In the tale, Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, was so upset by her brother’s antics that she hid in a cave, depriving the world of her light. The other gods and goddesses gathered to entice her out, trying everything until one goddess performed a comical dance that made the others laugh. Amaterasu emerged to see the commotion, restoring her light to the world.
- Amano Yasugawara - 15:30-16:00 AMA-NO-YASUGAWARA, Takachiho
Located about 10 minutes on foot from Amanoiwato Shrine Nishihongu along the Iwato River, when Amaterasu Omikami hid in Iwato, it became dark, and eight million gods gathered on this riverbank. This large cave is said to have been where they congregated and were deified. Also known as “Gyobogaiwaya,” it was once solely a place of worship, but over time, stones have been stacked by the hands of those praying. Today, the countless stacked stones enhance the mysterious and enchanting atmosphere of the Cheonan River.
