- Galle Fort - Also known as the Dutch Fort, Galle Fort is a historic fortification initially constructed by the Portuguese on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast. Built in the late 16th century, the original fortifications were relatively simple. UNESCO has recognized the site as a World Heritage Site for its exceptional display of an urban ensemble that demonstrates the interaction between European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries, meeting the fourth criterion for such recognition.
- Galle Fort Lighthouse - Located within the iconic Galle Fort, the Galle lighthouse stands seven meters above the road on the ramparts. As Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, it dates back to 1848, although the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1934. It was subsequently rebuilt to its current height of 26 meters. Situated within the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular tourist destination, this lighthouse is the most frequently visited in the country.
- Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - Situated in the southern region of Sri Lanka, the Galle district includes the small town of Balapitiya, which gains significance due to the presence of a river. The Madu River is rich in biodiversity, flowing through Sri Lanka’s wet zone and expanding into the large Madu Lagoon before reaching the Indian Ocean.
- Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications - The modern town has expanded significantly, yet the Fort remains the enduring heart of Galle’s history. The walled city has existed since the early 16th century, enduring through the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial periods. Today, it is designated as an Archaeological Reserve and recognized as a living World Heritage Site. The name Galle is believed to be derived from the Sinhalese word “gala,” meaning a cattle fold or posting-place, which the Portuguese adapted to Point-de-Galle.
- Galle - As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this remarkable city is a delight to explore on foot. It is a historically exotic trading port, featuring impressive Dutch colonial buildings, ancient mosques, churches, grand mansions, and museums.
