• Dunguaire Castle’s Medieval Banquet - The historic Dunguaire Castle has been a favored destination for tourists for many years. Not only is it one of Ireland’s most photographed castles, but it also played a significant role in the country’s literary revival in the early 1900s. Perched on a small elevated area and surrounded by the waters of Galway Bay on three sides, the castle is strategically located, with a narrow causeway linking it to the mainland. Constructed around 1520, it is believed to have been built on the site of the dún (or fort) of Guaire, a 7th-century king of Connacht, which is how it got its name, Dún Guaire. The 16th-century castle is thought to have been the seat of the Ó hEidhin (O’Hyne) family, who were the local rulers.

By the early 1600s, the castle was owned by the Martyn family, one of the affluent and renowned merchant ‘Tribes’ of Galway. The Martins retained ownership of the castle until the 20th century.
