Along the way, picturesque cabins and buildings from pre-National Park days can be seen.

Some of the Park’s best waterfalls are accessible via short hikes from the road, including Rainbow and Grotto Falls, or the Trillium Gap Trail. Noah “Bud” Ogles cabin and Place of a Thousand Drips are directly accessible from the car.

Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic spots along the way, as there are no services on the road.

Trailers, RVs, and buses are not allowed on Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.

• Grotto Falls Trail - The national park offers a good selection of moderately distanced hikes, many leading to beautiful waterfalls.

While it’s hard to pick the absolute best, a favorite is the Grotto Falls hike, which starts from the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.

The 2.6-mile loop trail is not particularly challenging, and most hikers complete it in under 2 hours, allowing for generous stops along the way.

The falls themselves are charming, though not large, and one of the enjoyable aspects of this hike is that the trail actually passes behind the waterfall.

• Mingus Mill - Established in 1886, Mingus Mill served around 200 local families by grinding corn and grains into grits and flour.

Learn about the innovative (for its time) engineering that powered the mill.

Today, the restored building and the square penstocks that direct water make for excellent photos, and the mill is often operational from Spring to Fall.

• Newfound Gap - Explorers always seek low points in mountains for easier passage. When Swiss geographer Guyot discovered an improved pass, it was named Newfound Gap.

With several different ecosystems descending through the valley, visitors find a unique mix of trees, including hardwood, pine-oak, and spruce, contributing to stunning fall foliage.

It’s the perfect spot to witness the blue “smoke” trails that the Smokies are famous for. The haze is actually moisture released by the vegetation, absorbing the sky’s blue color.

This was the site of the National Park’s dedication, with a memorial acknowledging the vital $5M contribution from the Rockefeller family towards the Park’s creation.

• Gatlinburg - Gatlinburg, TN, is the most popular base for accessing the National Park.

Located at the doorstep of the National Park, the town offers a wide range of paid attractions, entertainment, dining, and adventure operators.

Visitors can also try local moonshine at one of the distilleries.

There are no less than 3 chairlifts and tramways providing elevated views above the town.

• Clingmans Dome - Clingmans Dome is the tallest peak in the Park, and on a clear day, visitors can see 7 states from the top.

At the junction of Newfound Gap Road and the Clingmans Dome access road, the famous smoky effect is often visible rising from below.

After reaching the car park, a paved trail climbs steadily to the observation tower. Although paved, the trail can be quite steep in places, so wheelchairs are not recommended.

The trail is 1.2 miles with an elevation gain of 331 feet. Sitting at over 6,500 feet, many walkers pause along the trail to catch their breath.
