Setting Sail to Coral Gardens

As the sun peeked over the horizon, I found myself boarding a boat at the Royal Watler Cruise Ship Terminal, ready to embark on a snorkeling adventure that promised to be as thrilling as catching the perfect wave. Our guide, Alliano, and captain, Adrian, welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a thorough safety briefing. The ocean breeze was invigorating, a reminder of why I chose to call the Caribbean my home.

Our first stop was the Coral Gardens, a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. The water was a crystal-clear canvas, revealing a kaleidoscope of colors beneath the surface. I slipped into the warm embrace of the sea, my snorkeling gear in place, and was immediately greeted by a parade of tropical fish. Among them, a striking yellow and black angelfish and a curious parrotfish danced around a stunning purple gorgonian coral. Next, we set our course for the legendary Stingray City. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the sandbar, where the water was a welcoming waist-deep. Here, the southern stingrays glided gracefully through the water, their presence both majestic and serene. Alliano, our guide, handed out pieces of ballyhoo, and I had the chance to feed Big Mama, a gentle giant among the stingrays. With Alliano’s guidance, I held her in my arms and even gave her a kiss, a tradition said to bring seven years of good luck.

The experience was nothing short of magical. The stingrays, with their smooth, velvety skin, moved effortlessly around us, creating a dance that was both mesmerizing and humbling. It was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of respecting these incredible creatures. As a former surfer, I’ve always felt a connection to the ocean, but moments like these deepen that bond, reminding me of the beauty and mystery that lie beneath the waves.

Starfish Point Serenity

Our final destination was Starfish Point, a tranquil beach where the shallow waters revealed the hidden treasures of the sea. Here, red cushion sea stars dotted the sandy floor, their vibrant hues a stark contrast to the clear blue water. We were encouraged to gently pick them up, taking care not to expose them to the air or disturb their delicate nature.

As I held a starfish in my hand, I marveled at its intricate design, a testament to the ocean’s artistry. Nearby, a pirate-themed boat served as a floating snack bar, adding a touch of whimsy to the serene setting. While I didn’t indulge in the chicken wings on offer, the sight of fellow adventurers enjoying their snacks added to the laid-back atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day’s adventure, I felt a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the ocean’s gifts.
