When the conflict began days later, the family gathered in fear, hoping their door wouldn’t be breached by soldiers with bayonets.

• Gettysburg National Cemetery - Soldiers were dispatched to bury the fallen where they lay, both Union and Confederate. Most graves were only a foot deep, as the army had other battles to attend to and couldn’t afford the time for proper burials.
• Tillie Pierce House Inn - When Hettie Shriver fled to her parents’ farm, she brought along her family and her 15-year-old neighbor, Tillie Pierce. Pierce was fascinated by the battle and watched Union soldiers pass by. However, once the cannons roared, she realized the danger. Even after escaping with Hettie to the farm, she couldn’t avoid the battle’s horrors.

• Gettysburg Museum of History - This museum houses one of the largest private collections of Civil War artifacts in the nation, with over 4,000 items. Although collections like this were legally acquired, Gettysburg has experienced significant looting over the years. • David Wills House - David Wills, an attorney and a key figure in the Gettysburg community, was instrumental in organizing the creation of the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
• Gettysburg Hotel - Dating back to 1797, this building wasn’t always the Gettysburg Hotel. It began as a modest tavern, once owned by the notable McClellan family.
• Lincoln Statue at Wills House - The man beside Lincoln is unnamed, representing “the common man.” This symbolizes the ongoing significance of Gettysburg and Lincoln to ordinary people today.
