Embarking on a climb up Mount Batur, Bali’s renowned active volcano, in the early morning hours is one of the most adventurous, challenging, and fulfilling experiences on the Island of the Gods.
Mount Batur (Gunung Batur), situated northwest of Mount Agung, features a unique “double caldera” (one crater within another), offering some of Bali’s most breathtaking views. The first recorded eruption of Batur occurred in 1804, and it has remained frequently active, with the last significant eruption in 1963. The southeast side of the larger 10×13 km caldera houses a caldera lake, Danau Batur, which is the largest crater lake on Bali and a vital source of fish. The inner crater forms a classic volcano-shaped peak that rises to 1,717 meters. The caldera is inhabited and includes the two main villages of Kedisan and Toya Bungkah.
