Stunning, moving and serene - I heard about this beautiful 11th century water temple and decided to go for melukat. The environment and holy springs rushing water is a sight to behold. The ceremony is beautiful and unique and not too many people. It felt deeply spiritual and something i will take with me forever.

An experience I will remember my whole life ❤️ - This was a spiritual experience like no other I have had, so much personal reflection and purification of problems I had been carrying with me for a long time. The surroundings are beautiful and the water is crystal clear. Unfortunately not one for people with mobility issues, there are A LOT of steps. We booked a personal experience with Putu through the Seeking Sophie website and we were not disappointed. We started by dressing in traditional Balinese temple dress and made our own offerings whilst being told about the symbolism of the different elements. This was followed by a led meditation and explanation of the ceremony. The water ceremony itself was wonderful, each water source was significant to different areas of the mind and body and ancestral elements. I even had a lovely but slightly odd encounter with a crab! Following the ceremony we had a blessing at the temple followed by some good and wonderful conversation. Other people did not have the same experience on the standard tours, it was a personal experience like no other!

Amazing spiritual experience - This was a wonderful experience for our group. Ketut was very friendly and knowledgeable, guiding us through the temple and purification ceremony. We learned a lot about the Balinese practices and culture. For now, this temple is not too crowded and touristy. I hope it stays like this! Please be respectful and honor this sacred space. It’s not just for instagram

Wonderful experience, less crowded than others - Wonderful experience, such a calm environment with few visitors in the morning. We were the only tourists when we first arrived. Cost for entrance was 30k IDR per adult, 15k for children. We had a priest (?) guide us through the temple and purification ceremony. It was an experience not to be missed, even for our youngest who didn't want to put her head near the water. From previous reviews, I was under the impression the guide through the purification ceremony was a 'free' service with a donation expected, however we were asked at the end to pay 150k per adult and 100k per child. Despite being caught off guard at the price at the end, I would recommend to anyone visiting Ubud.

Melukat ceremony at Mengening temple - The Melukat purification ceremony was a beautiful experience. Our guide Ketut was really informative and knowledgeable with perfect English, explaining each step of the purification and happy to spend time answering questions. Ketut took some great pictures for us that we will treasure. Ketut also tailored a trip for us that day too and we went to see a nearby coffee plantation, rice terrace and the happy swing in Bali - all highly recommended.

Amazing temple - The temple is beautiful, smaller than Tirta empul and more intimate. It is not very busy and you can enjoy the nature and beauty of the site. They have a very nice pond and everything is very well maintained. I would certainly repeat.

Holy Water Purification - Pura Mengening is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors go there for spiritual purification. Picturesque descend down to the water. There are substantial number of steps down a long gentle curve stone staircase before reaching the valley floor where the temple is located. Pure water, considered sacred force of life in Bali, flows from natural spring to 10 holy sprouts into crystal-clear pool. This is where participants go in to dissipate negative energy, spiritual blockades, emotional burdens, mental stress, misfortunes, and for physical healing. The cost is around $30 USD that includes a sarong rental and a guide to lead you through the ritual ceremony. There is also a “dry” option where you hand an offering to a Balians, who will bless you with holy water, instruct you to place rice on your forehand and throat, while he pray for spiritual awakening and purification. In Bali, placement of the rice on the forehead during a ritual symbolizes wisdom and connection to the divine. Placing rice on the throat/neck is associated with purification of speech and thoughts.

Breathtaking place, disappointing treatment - The place was truly a favourite of ours — peaceful and quiet. However, we were deeply disappointed by the interactions with the locals once inside. Price per person: • Entrance: 30,000 $ (listed price) • Offering (mandatory): 100,000 $ • Guide (mandatory): 200,000 $ The issue isn’t the money itself. We would have gladly offered these amounts — even more — for the magic of the place and the guide’s accompaniment. But because we apparently “looked rich”, we were charged double without hesitation. If we had been told about the prices upfront, it wouldn’t have been a problem either. Such a shame to have the experience ruined at the end by being taken advantage of like that.
