Excavations at the site began in 1892, but the catacombs were not discovered until 1900 when, by mere chance, a donkey drawing a cart fell into a pit, leading to their discovery. The Alexandria Lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse continued to function until the time of the Arab conquest.
