These magnificent structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also includes several cemeteries and the remnants of a workers’ village. Situated at the edge of the Western Desert, it is approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of the Nile River in Giza, and about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Cairo’s city center. Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple is notable for the discovery of several statues of Khafre, found in a well in the temple’s floor by Mariette in 1860.

Built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu (circa 2600 BC), it is a unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt. This was Sneferu’s second pyramid, rising from the desert at a 54-degree angle, with the top section (above 47 meters) constructed at a shallower angle of 43 degrees, giving the pyramid its distinctive ‘bent’ appearance.
• Dahshur - The Red Pyramid, also known as the North Pyramid, is the largest of the three major pyramids at the Dahshur necropolis in Cairo, Egypt. Named for the rusty reddish hue of its red limestone stones, it is the third largest Egyptian pyramid, following those of Khufu and Khafra at Giza. It is considered Egypt’s first successful attempt at building a “true” smooth-sided pyramid. Locals refer to the Red Pyramid as el-heram el-watwaat, meaning the Bat Pyramid. Originally, the Red Pyramid was covered with white Tura limestone, but only a few of these stones remain at the base, at the corners. During the Middle Ages, much of the white Tura limestone was removed for construction in Cairo, revealing the red limestone beneath.
