- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan, located in Salah al-Din Square in Cairo’s historic district, is a monumental mosque and madrasa built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan Al-Nasir Hasan. Renowned for its massive size and innovative architectural features, it remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
- Al Rifai Mosque - The Al-Refai or Refaai Mosque, situated in Citadel Square next to the Cairo Citadel, now serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. Positioned opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361, it was designed to complement the older structure. This was part of a 19th-century initiative by Egypt’s rulers to align themselves with the perceived grandeur of earlier Islamic history and modernize the city.
