• Colossi of Memnon - Two impressive twin statues depicting Pharaoh Amenhotep III, along with two smaller statues at their feet (one representing his wife and the other his mother), stand majestically against the Luxor skyline. Each statue, standing 60 feet tall, marks the entrance to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple. They are famously called the Colossi of Memnon due to a sound phenomenon caused by one statue after an earthquake. Originally constructed in the Theban Necropolis west of the Nile River in modern Luxor, these colossal statues, made of quartzite sandstone believed to be quarried at El-Gabal el-Ahmar near modern Cairo, were transported 420 miles overland to the ancient city of Thebes and have endured for thousands of years.
