• Great Sphinx - Continue on to the Great Sphinx, which features the head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion. Dating back to the time of Khephren, this Sphinx was created to guard the pyramid of King Chefren. Next, visit the Valley Temple, associated with the Pyramid of Chefren, which served as a place for the mummification process before the king’s burial. Then, proceed to Memphis, the oldest capital.
• Memphis and Sakkara - The oldest structures in Cairo date back only to the last few centuries BC during the Greco-Roman period. However, on the outskirts of the city stand the Giza Pyramids, some of the oldest structures on Earth. Despite their proximity to Cairo, the age difference between the pyramids and the city itself highlights their distinct histories.

The pyramids at Giza and other locations in the desert near Cairo are part of the legacy of an ancient city and civilization that declined long before Cairo was established. This civilization named the area Memphis, which was the seat of power for the Old Kingdom (2686—2181 BC) of Ancient Egypt, home to the pharaohs who built the pyramids.

• Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Saqqara is one of several notable necropolis sites near Cairo that offer impressive sights and hold significant archaeological importance. In fact, Saqqara may be of more interest to archaeologists than Giza. The vast site hosts burials dating from before the Old Kingdom up through the Greek Period of Egyptian history. The most famous structure at Saqqara is Djoser’s Step Pyramid. Dating from the 3rd dynasty (2667—2448 BC), it was the first all-stone complex ever built on earth. It also showcases an important architectural innovation for the construction of the Giza Pyramids and other later pyramids in the 4th dynasty and beyond.

Djoser’s pyramid was the first to use multiple mastabas (rectangular tomb structures) stacked on top of one another to form a step pyramid. This construction paved the way for the smooth sides of the Giza Pyramids and the smaller 5th and 6th dynasty pyramids found at Saqqara and other nearby sites, such as Dahshur and Abu Sir.
