Wadi Al Hitan is a protected area and a natural heritage site recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005. Known to scientists as Zeuglodon Valley, it was discovered in 1936 and is located 35 km west of Wadi El-Rayan, deep in the western desert. This fossil-rich area is considered an open museum, dating back 45 million years, and contains petrified primitive whale skeletons, shark teeth, shells, and mangrove roots preserved in soft rocks. Everywhere you go, you will find petrified sea shells and corals.
