- Pyramids of Giza - The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. This site includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. Situated at the edge of the Western Desert, the site is approximately 9 km (5 mi) west of the Nile River in Giza and about 13 km (8 mi) southwest of Cairo’s city center. The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids built in ancient Egypt and have historically symbolized ancient Egypt in Western culture. They gained popularity during Hellenistic times when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Although diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway, which was largely destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Memphis and Sakkara - Explore Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara, one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites.
- The Sphinx of Memphis - The second largest sphinx in the world.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, often called the Sphinx of Giza or simply the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head. Facing directly from west to east, it is located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx’s face is generally thought to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Carved from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Pharaoh Khafre’s reign (c. 2558–2532 BC).
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple has yielded several statues of Khafre. Some were discovered in a well in the temple’s floor by Mariette in 1860, while others were found during subsequent excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
