• Gjirokaster Castle - Initially constructed in the 12th century by the Despots of Epirus, a branch of the Byzantine government, who established the basic towered structure of the castle. Later, during Ottoman rule, the site underwent extensive renovations and expansions, elevating it to a level of grandeur not seen since its original creation centuries earlier. In the 1800s, a clock tower and aqueduct were added. In the 1930s, the intriguingly named Zog, King of the Albanians, transformed the fortress into a prison, adding numerous cells and fortifications to detain members of various resistance forces active in the country during his reign.
