- Priene Ancient City - Priene, a historical town, is situated near Güllübahçe village, 16 km from Söke. As a member of the Ionian Confederation, it flourished particularly during the Hellenistic era. The town is renowned for its beautiful houses, public buildings, and temples. The city walls of Priene were 2 meters wide and 6 meters high, constructed with squared stone blocks on the front and rear, filled with rubble and mud in between. This construction method, known as “emplekton,” is typical of the Hellenistic period. The Athena Temple, located at the city’s highest point, was the oldest, most significant, and magnificent structure in Priene. Designed by Pythius, who also built the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the temple is considered a classic example of Anatolian-Ionian architecture.
- Miletus - Miletus is located 42 km from Söke, a district of Aydin province. Initially established in the 2nd Millennium B.C. on the Latmic Gulf coast (now Lake Bafa), it became one of the twelve prominent cities along the Aegean Sea, forming the Ionian Confederation. The Theatre, built on the southwest slopes of Kaletepe hill, utilizing the natural incline, is the best-preserved structure in Miletus. Originally constructed in the 4th century BC, it underwent modifications during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, eventually accommodating 25,000 spectators in the Roman era. The Caravanserai, built in the 15th century during the Menteş Principality, features a courtyard and lodging rooms. The lower floor served as stables, while the upper floor accommodated travelers.
- Didim - The Apollo Temple in Didyma was renowned as a sanctuary and oracle site linked to Miletus. Recent excavations have uncovered evidence of dense settlement, indicating Didyma was more than just an oracle site. The origins of the names Didyma and Didymaion have been debated, with one myth suggesting Didymaion, meaning “twin temples,” was associated with Artemis, Apollo’s twin sister. However, lacking definitive evidence, this remains a myth. The first excavations in Didyma occurred in 1858, focusing on the Sacred Road. It was discovered that the road was 16.5 km long, with a width varying between 5 and 7 meters, made of stone blocks. Lined with shops, votive fountains, monumental tombs, baths, and an area for the Artemis cult, the road was a significant feature.

Your journey will escort you to three distinctive coastal towns in Ionia. Priene, an active participant in the Ionian Federation’s port activities, holds the record for the earliest geometric city planning. In its heyday, Miletos was hailed as a prosperous and leading city, which contributed its alphabet to the remainder of the classical world. As a significant port, Miletos was the birthplace of multiple philosophers and scholars. Famous for its esteemed oracles, Didyma’s Apollo Temple was among antiquity’s holiest sites. In spite of enduring numerous instances of looting and conflagration, primitive impressions endure. Near the location, you will stumble upon the spectacular Altinkum beach. Lunch will be served along the path of the excursion. You will head back to Izmir in the late hours.
