The Moonlandscape and the Namib Desert gravel plains, featuring dolomite outcrops, lava dykes, and evidence of at least three ice ages, are remarkable. The Welwitschia plants thrive in a narrow belt known as the Welwitschia Plains, where specimens as old as 1,500 years can be found. These plants are unique, having only two leaves emerging from the stem. The Moonlandscape, approximately 500 million years old, offers a unique experience akin to being on another planet. Goanikontes, the first freshwater oasis in the desert, has historically attracted human settlement and development, rich with memories of challenging times. The profound silence of the desert gravel plains adds to their mystique. As we drive past the tiny lichens, which form a field across the desert, we marvel at these small organisms—a symbiotic partnership between algae and fungi. How do these and other plants endure in such a harsh environment with only 15mm of annual rainfall? Fog serves as the primary moisture source; how have they adapted to this condition?
