Gondar, a medieval town, is situated approximately 748 km from Addis Ababa. After the fall of Lalibela towards the end of the 13th century, Ethiopia lacked a national capital for several centuries. The emperors were compelled to travel continuously on campaigns to protect their expansive empire and secure loyalty to their reign. For their governmental base, they relied on what historical records refer to as ‘roving tent capitals.’ Tired of this itinerant and nomadic existence of many of his predecessors, Emperor Fassiledes established Gondar in 1636 and commissioned the construction of the first and most splendid of the castles. Subsequent emperors contributed their own additions, primarily within the same castle complex. Although the precise date of this grand structure’s construction is unknown, a Yemeni ambassador visiting Gondar in 1648 described it as “one of the most marvelous of buildings.”
