The fortress of Gori (Goris Tsikhe) was likely in use by the 7th century, and archaeological evidence suggests an urban community in Classical Antiquity. During the 2008 Russo-Georgian war, the town was subjected to aerial attacks by the Russian air force from the start of the conflict.

  The name of this monastery translates to the “Monastery of the Cross.” Jvari Monastery is a 6th-century Georgian Orthodox monastery near Mtskheta. Along with other historic structures in Mtskheta, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Jvari Monastery is perched on a rocky mountain at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking Mtskheta, the former capital of the kingdom of Iberia.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (literally the Cathedral of the Living Pillar) is currently the second-largest church in Georgia (after the Holy Trinity Cathedral). Known as the burial site of Christ’s robe, Svetitskhoveli is one of the principal Georgian Orthodox churches and is among the most revered places of worship in the region.
