A Rainy Day in Gori: Embracing History and Culture

As the rain gently taps on the cobblestones of Gori, the city invites you to delve into its rich tapestry of history and culture. The weather forecast for April 5th and 6th suggests a mix of rain and partly cloudy skies, making it an ideal time to explore the city’s indoor attractions. Start your journey with a visit to the Historical Landmarks Tour, available from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. This tour offers a comprehensive exploration of Georgia’s historical relics, including the ancient Jvari Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perched on a hilltop, the monastery provides a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragavi rivers. As you wander through the old town of Mtskheta, once the capital of the Iberia kingdom, you’ll be captivated by the ornate balconies and architectural grandeur. The tour also includes a visit to the enormous Svetitskhoveli Church, constructed in the 11th century, which houses what is believed to be the robe of Christ.

“Lovely Mtskheta, Uplistsikhe and Gori tour with Aleko (Evatours) - With all the adverts for different tours, it’s hard to pick which company to go with. We went with EvaTours and were very happy with the choice. Our trip featured pickup from our location, comfortable transport, a great host offering lots of information and history as well as translation services when needed. The stops did not feel rushed, we went at our group pace and everyone had good experiences at each location. It was a full day for a young family, but we all agreed it was a very special day and fantastic value for money. Our host, Aleko, was wonderful and engaging with our kids (8 & 10). He showed them locations and told stories they found interesting and he made sure we took routes that would offer a chance to stretch their legs and run (& And make noise). For visitors and especially visitors with families, I’d thoroughly recommend.” - Reviewed on 2019-08-14

Discovering Stalin’s Legacy

The rain-soaked streets of Gori lead you to the Stalin’s Museum Tour, available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This private one-day tour offers a deep dive into the life of Joseph Stalin, the renowned communist leader born in Gori. The museum showcases intriguing aspects of Stalin’s life, featuring one-of-a-kind photographs, mementos, and furnishings. The humble abode where Stalin was born is maintained in its original form under a nearby stone shelter, providing a glimpse into his early life. As you explore the museum, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and significance of Stalin’s legacy.

The tour also includes a visit to the Uplistsikhe caves, known as the ‘Lord’s Stronghold.’ This ancient rock-hewn town dates back to the 2nd-1st millennium B.C. and was a significant hub in Kartli during antiquity. The caves offer a unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran, as well as the coexistence of pagan and Christian architecture. As you wander through the caves, you’ll be transported back in time, experiencing the rich history and culture of the region.

“Excellent and rich tour. - Excellent and rich tour. You visit a lot of attractions, but it’s so interesting that you don’t feel any fatigue at all after such a day. And, of course, during such active recreation as a pleasant bonus, you improve your physical fitness. I am so imbued with this country that I will definitely visit here more than once.” - Reviewed on 2024-06-08
