- Uplistsiche Cave Town - Uplistsikhe, meaning “Lord’s Fortress,” is a town carved into rock, situated in eastern Georgia. Established in the late Bronze Age around 1000 BC, it was inhabited until the 13th century AD. From the 6th century BC to the 11th century AD, Uplistsikhe served as a significant political and religious hub. At the summit of the complex is a Christian stone basilica from the 10th century. The rock-cut structures feature a large hall known as Tamaris Darbazi, pagan sacrificial sites, residences, and functional buildings like a pharmacy, bakery, prison, and amphitheater. These structures are interconnected by tunnels, some of which served as emergency escape routes.
- Stalin Museum - The Joseph Stalin Museum, located in Gori, Georgia, is dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union leader born in Gori. The museum maintains its Soviet-era style.
- Gori Fortress - Gori Fortress is a medieval citadel in Georgia, perched on a rocky hill above the city of Gori. Although first mentioned in 13th-century records, archaeological findings indicate the area was fortified in the last centuries BC. The fortress controlled key strategic and economic routes and housed a large garrison. In the 16th century, the Ottomans captured it to dominate Tbilisi.
- Jvari Church - Jvari (The Cross) Monastery, a 6th-century monastery, is located on a cliff above Mtskheta. It represents the pinnacle of early Christian Georgian architectural and artistic aspirations. The view from the top is breathtaking.
Jvari Monastery is perched on a rocky mountaintop at the meeting point of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking Mtskheta, the former capital of the Kingdom of Iberia.
- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - Svetitskhoveli (The Life Giving Pillar) Cathedral is one of Georgia’s most sacred sites and, along with Jvari Monastery, a highlight of any visit to Mtskheta. Founded in 1010, it was built on the site of Georgia’s first church and houses the graves of ancient Georgian kings, including Sidonia, who is said to have been buried holding Christ’s robe. Many (non-aggressive) beggars can be found at the entrance gate. There is a wedding chapel with friendly staff.
Svetitskhoveli is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently the second-largest church building in Georgia, after the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
- Samtavro Church - Samtavro is located north along the main road, within easy walking distance from the Svetitskhoveli complex. Legend has it that St. Nino lived and prayed at this site within the smaller of its two existing churches. This small church dates back to the 4th century. The larger church on this site was constructed in the 11th century and contains the graves of Mirian, the Georgian king who embraced Christianity, and his wife, Nana.
