- Christie’s - As the world’s oldest fine art auctioneer, Christie’s has been selling fine art, furniture, jewelry, and wine since James Christie conducted the inaugural sale in London on December 5, 1766. Christie’s continues to provide an ideal setting for the sale of the world’s finest collections and greatest artworks before their auction.
Christie’s organizes numerous auctions each year, offering a constant array of items to view, and features an art cafe for a potential pit-stop.
- Bond Street - Established in the 1720s, Bond Street became a popular social hub for Mayfair’s upper-class residents by the late 18th century. It has been referenced in various literary works, including Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” and Virginia Woolf’s 1925 novel “Mrs Dalloway.” In Suzanna Clarke’s “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell,” Bond Street is described as having “the most fashionable shops in all the kingdom.” Bond Street is also featured on the British Monopoly board.
From Henry Moore’s sculpture atop the former Time Life building to a bust of the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet, Mayfair’s main thoroughfare is filled with artistic surprises that many often overlook.
- Mayfair - In the early 20th century, Cork Street became synonymous with the art world and is regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s “most important art hubs,” partly due to its proximity to the Royal Academy. Its galleries have launched the careers of numerous major modern artists in Britain; the Mayor Gallery hosted the first London exhibitions of Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró, and Peggy Guggenheim opened her gallery at number 30 in 1938.
In 2023, 16 art galleries call Cork Street home, and we will visit some of them.
- Sprueth Magers - This building boasts a rich history of hosting various art galleries. The Grafton Galleries were located here in the early 20th century. French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel presented the first major exhibition of Impressionist paintings in Britain here in 1905.
We will step inside to admire its stunning interior design, some of which has endured for over a century.
- Royal Academy of Arts - Situated in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London, England, the Royal Academy of Arts is an art institution founded in 1768. It holds a unique position as an independent, privately funded institution led by distinguished artists and architects.
- Burlington Arcade - Known as the “Jewel of Mayfair,” this Regency-style building features sculptures by Benjamin Clemens, a professor of sculpture at the Royal College of Art, adorning the Piccadilly façade. Today, the Arcade proudly hosts three artistic hubs: Opera Gallery, the Gagosian Shop, and the Lalique Art Gallery, the first-ever exhibition space from the French crystal brand.
The Arcade has also showcased some of the area’s most significant sculptures, including the permanent installation of Antony Gormley’s “Cinch” on the north façade. Installed in 2017, this sculpture is the Turner Prize-winning artist’s first work in solid stainless steel, symbolizing the human as a work in progress.
