The Game is afoot…
Begin at Northumberland Avenue, pausing outside the Sherlock Holmes Pub to delve into the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the creation of Sherlock Holmes.
The Sherlock Holmes Pub was once the Northumberland Hotel, where Sir Henry Baskerville stayed upon arriving in London to seek Sherlock Holmes’ assistance.
Directly across is the Turkish bath where Holmes and Watson would unwind during or after a case.
This tour also takes you past many of London’s iconic landmarks, and as your personal guide, it will be a pleasure to share a love for the city and point out a few hidden gems along the way.
- Metropolitan Police - Scotland Yard Detectives Lestrade and Hopkins were stationed here at this historic Police headquarters. Sherlock didn’t hold them in particularly high regard!
The building has been beautifully restored, complete with large gas lamps. Squint your eyes, and that modern black cab could easily transform into a Hansom Cab dropping Sherlock off at the Yard.
Let’s continue the trail….
- Simpson’s in the Strand - “Come Watson, let’s take nourishment at Simpsons in the Strand.”
Words often spoken by Sherlock Holmes, as Simpsons was his favorite restaurant.
Originally a Chess Club and Coffee House, this fine establishment became a favorite of Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Winston Churchill. It remains one of the finest traditional English restaurants.
If we arrive before lunch service, we can peek inside and see the meat carving trolleys that have been in use since 1840.
- Somerset House - Not exactly a Sherlock Holmes stop, but a fascinating place to walk through as a shortcut to the station. Once the site of a Tudor Palace belonging to the Duke of Somerset, it was later rebuilt as a grand civic building in 1775. Recently used as a filming location for ‘Love Actually’.
Let’s walk down a 300-year-old staircase and make our way to Temple station.
- St Bartholomew’s Hospital - London’s oldest hospital and the place where Holmes and Watson first met after being introduced by ‘Young Stamford’ in A Study in Scarlet.
Watson encounters this old colleague in the Criterion Bar, who mentions an eccentric friend named Sherlock looking for someone to share the rent of rooms on Baker Street.
At a laboratory in St Barts, Holmes amazes Watson with his analytical and deductive skills, and the next day at 221b, their partnership is established.
The area around the hospital also has a rich history, and the guide will share those stories with you as well.
- The Langham, London - The grand and luxurious Langham Hotel had just opened when, in August 1889, two emerging authors were invited to dine with an American publisher on a talent scouting mission. The two authors were Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, and this meeting would launch their international careers.
- Queen Anne Street Practice - Dr. Watson can’t remain a bachelor forever and eventually marries Mary Morstan. Leaving 221b Baker Street, he sets up home and opens his own medical practice at 8 Queen Anne Street.
Standing outside this building, one can imagine Sherlock on the doorstep, knocking with his cane, and Mrs. Watson’s eyes rolling as her husband is called away on yet another adventure.
- Crosbie Care - A must-see pilgrimage spot for true Sherlockians. Inside this building, Arthur Conan Doyle had his medical practice. He would walk here each morning, a journey of 20 minutes, undoubtedly drawing inspiration from the characters and buildings he passed.
He would later joke, “Not a single patient darkened my door.”
The exterior of this building remains unchanged since Conan Doyle was here in 1891. Between patients, he wrote the series of stories that would become “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.”
- Sherlock Holmes Statue - Baker Street Station is one of the best-preserved and oldest Underground stations in the world. The London Underground is so old that Holmes and Watson traveled it several times in the stories.
Just outside the station is the Sherlock Holmes Statue, commissioned by the Abbey National Building Society, which occupied 221 Baker Street for many years.
Let’s go say hello to Sherlock, and then the guide will share an interesting story about this statue before heading to Baker Street.
- Sherlock Holmes Museum - The tour concludes at the world-famous 221b Baker Street, where you can shop for Sherlock souvenirs or enter the museum, which is set up as the home shared by Sherlock and Watson with their landlady, Mrs. Hudson.
