After a quick photo opportunity at the beach to enjoy the surf and the Tasman Sea views, there is an option to explore local shops or join the group for a visit to the Hokitika Gorge.
• Hokitika Gorge Walk - Renowned as one of the West Coast’s most iconic and photographed locations, the gorge’s vibrant turquoise waters create a stunning contrast against the mature native podocarp forest. With several lookout points offering unique perspectives of the captivating river, it is a favored spot for nature lovers and photographers. The track is easy and gently undulating.
• Lake Ianthe - Encircled by hills and native podocarp forests, with a large flax swamp at its southern end, the lake is a vital habitat for endangered wetland species like the Great Crested Grebe. Nestled in a former glacial trough, the lake is surrounded by a moraine and drains into the Wanganui River via Ianthe Creek. A brief stop here allows for photos before proceeding to Franz Josef.
