- Casa Santo Domingo Museums - The largest monastery in Antigua Guatemala, located on the grounds of the Santo Domingo Monastery. Casa Santo Domingo was originally a key convent in the Americas, housing followers of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Established in 1538 with the arrival of the first Dominicans in Guatemala, the monastery was a grand structure with two towers and ten bells, rich in treasures and relics.
Though partially destroyed by the 1773 Santa Marta earthquake, the remaining structure stands as a monument to baroque architecture and historical treasures. The ancient walls, brick archways, and tile corridors reflect the history of the original Casa Santo Domingo. Part of the ruins has been transformed into Antigua’s only five-star hotel, which opened in 1989.
- Cerro de la Cruz - Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from above. Spot woodpeckers, immerse in nature, and capture stunning photos. This serene viewpoint offers a chance to disconnect from daily life, with views of Antigua Guatemala and its three volcanoes.
- Iglesia de La Merced - A stunning yellow church exemplifying Baroque Guatemalan architecture. Dating back to the 18th century, it is one of Antigua Guatemala’s most beautiful churches. Surrounded by a lovely garden, handicraft vendors, and excellent cafes serving authentic “Antigüeño” coffee, known for its chocolate notes from the roasting process.
- Arco de Santa Catalina - Visit the most iconic spot in Antigua Guatemala: The Arch Street, home to the Santa Catalina Arch. This landmark is a symbol of Antigua and features prominently on postcards. Originally built by the Santa Catarina Mártir Convent in 1693, it holds a secret to be revealed on this premium tour. Prepare for breathtaking photos!
- The Plaza Central Park - Just two blocks from the Santa Catalina Arch, begin exploring Antigua’s Central Park, known locally as Plaza Central. This area is steeped in history, surrounded by the first national palace, the first Cathedral of Guatemala, and the mermaid’s fountain at the park’s center. Be captivated by this charming location.
- Antigua, Guatemala Cathedral - A Roman Catholic church in Antigua Guatemala. The original church, built around 1541, faced several earthquakes, leading to the demolition of the first building in 1669. Rebuilt and consecrated in 1680, by 1743 it was one of Central America’s largest cathedrals. The 1773 Guatemala earthquake caused significant damage, but the front towers remained largely intact and have been restored, with the cathedral partially rebuilt.
- Guatemala City - After exploring Guatemala’s colonial history, return to the city for a lunch break. Then, continue the tour to visit the city’s most iconic and historically significant sites. Get ready for more enjoyment!
- Avenida Las Americas - Experience “Americas Avenue,” featuring various monuments and plazas dedicated to different American countries. - Avenida La Reforma - At the end of “Americas Avenue,” discover the Obelisco, which connects to “Reforma Avenue,” one of Guatemala City’s main boulevards. Once residential, it is now a business and commercial district. Throughout the 20th century, sculptures were added, honoring figures like Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross; Mexican leaders Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Benito Juárez; José Joaquín Palma and Rafael Álvarez Ovalle, creators of Guatemala’s national anthem; and Miguel Ángel Asturias, 1967 Nobel Prize in Literature winner.
