After breakfast, the trek leaves the rainforest glades and continues on an ascending path, crossing a small valley and walking along a steep rocky ridge covered with heather until the ridge ends. The Machame route then turns west onto a river gorge leading to Shira Camp. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp - Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, the third day of the 7-day Kilimanjaro Machame trek continues east up the ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The route then heads southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After the tower, the path reaches a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft. The itinerary then descends to Barranco Camp at 13,000ft. Here, trekkers rest, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight. Although the day ends at the same elevation as it started, it is crucial for acclimatization and prepares the body for summit day.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp - Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

On day 4 of the 7-day Mt. Kilimanjaro Machame route, after breakfast, trekkers ascend the eastern wall just below the Heim Glacier, offering spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route then takes a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, separating trekkers from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. The trail continues into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, leading to Karanga Campsite. This short day is designed for acclimatization.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, the trek leaves Karanga campsite and reaches the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Day 5 of the 7-day Kilimanjaro Machame route continues to Barafu Camp. At this point, the South Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. Here, trekkers make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for summit day. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp - Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
Time: 7-8 hrs ascent, 4-6 hrs descent
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trek to the summit begins early in the morning (between midnight and 2:00 am), heading between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The route travels northwest, ascending steep scree to Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most challenging part of the hike, both physically and mentally. A break at Stella Point (18,600 ft) offers a chance to witness a spectacular sunrise, weather permitting. From Stella Point, it is a 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Fast hikers may see the sunrise from the peak. The descent from the summit goes straight down to Mweka Camp, with a pause at Barafu for lunch. The final meal on the mountain is enjoyed in the evening before a well-deserved rest.

Mweka Camp to Moshi

After breakfast, the final day of the 7-day Kilimanjaro Machame route involves descending to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, the path can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are usually sufficient, but rain gear and warmer clothing should be kept handy.
From the gate, the trek continues for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet trekkers at Mweka Village to drive them back to the hotel in Moshi. This marks the end of the 7-day Kilimanjaro hiking/climbing/trekking via the Machame route.
