Mount Kilimanjaro - Day 1: Marangu to Mandara Hut

Mount Kilimanjaro - Day 1: Marangu to Mandara Hut
Climbers are transported from their hotel to Marangu Gate, which is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters at the entrance to the rainforest. The trail ascends through the verdant forest to Mandara Hut, located at 2,700 meters. This trek takes about 4 hours at a leisurely pace.
Day 2: Mandara to Horombo Hut
Climbers depart Mandara around 9 a.m. The initial half-hour continues through the rainforest, after which the trail opens into alpine moorland for the roughly 7-hour journey to Horombo, situated at 3,700 meters.
Day 3: Horombo to Kibo Hut
There are two routes from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut. The “upper route” is the older path, ascending steeply from Horombo to the base of Mawenzi, a climb of about 600 meters. This path then descends to the “saddle.”
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Summit, then descent to Horombo Hut.
Climbers are awakened at approximately 11 p.m. After donning all their warm clothing, they enjoy a hot drink and set off at midnight.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to the Park Gate.
The descent from Horombo to Mandara Hut takes about 3 hours, and the final segment of the descent through the forest to Marangu Gate takes an additional 2 hours.
