- Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) was created in the caldera of Mount Hakone following the volcano’s last eruption 3,000 years ago. Today, the lake, with Mount Fuji as its backdrop, serves as a symbol of Hakone. Hakone Sightseeing Boats operate pirate-themed boats between Moto-Hakone on the lake’s southern shore and Togendai at the northern end. A boat cruise across the lake takes about 30 minutes and costs 1,200 yen.
- Owaku-dani Valley - When observing the vast, barren landscape, a white column of smoke can be seen rising from the mountain’s surface. Owakudani is one of Hakone’s most renowned viewpoints, offering a close-up view of intense volcanic activity. This area was formed by a phreatic eruption and pyroclastic flow nearly 3,000 years ago. The distinctive sulfur smell throughout the area earned it the historical name Jigokudani (Hell Valley). A local specialty is the “black eggs,” which have shells that turn black due to a chemical reaction with geothermal energy and volcanic gas. Visitors can reach this unique site via the ropeway, enjoying a scenic view of Hakone and Mt. Fuji along the way. The cable car from Togendai, where the pirate boat docks, costs ¥1,200.
- Oshino Hakkai - Recognized as a Mt. Fuji World Cultural Heritage Site Asset (registered in June 2013), Oshino Hakkai has been revered as the “spring of the gods” for centuries, with many legends surrounding it. There are eight springs at Oshino Hakkai. The area now known as Oshino-mura was once a lake, which was gradually filled by eruptions from Mt. Fuji, bridging the gap between Fujisusono and Mt. Misaka.
