2 PM - Arrival in Hampi
The tour begins with a visit to Hampi’s largest idol, Ugra Narasimha, which stands 22 feet tall and was sculpted by a Brahmin during the reign of Krishnadevaraya. A serpent with an open hood is positioned behind the head.
Next, the tour proceeds to Badavi Linga, the largest linga in Hampi. Crafted from black stone, it stands 12 feet high. A canal flows through it, ensuring it is always surrounded by water.
The Balakrishna Temple, constructed by King Krishnadevaraya in 1513 AD to commemorate the conquest of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri, is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his infancy and features exquisite carvings of mythical creatures.
Hemakunta Hill is the following stop, offering numerous ancient temples and panoramic views of the entire town. It is also an ideal spot to watch the sunset.
Virupaksha Temple - The day concludes at the magnificent Virupaksha Temple, dating back to the Hoysala period and recognized as the oldest temple in Hampi. The temple tower boasts eleven storeys and reaches a height of 165 feet, with the Tungabhadra River flowing inside.
Stone Chariot and Other Wonders of Hampi
Royal Enclosures - The day begins at the Vijaya Vittala Temple, considered one of the grandest masterpieces in the area. It is built on a polyhedron foundation, with the renowned stone chariot made of rough quartz at the forefront. The chariot features carvings of soldiers, hunters, and even foreign visitors like the Portuguese and Arabs.
The temple’s musical pillars are celebrated as one of humanity’s greatest artistic achievements.
The next stop is the King’s Balance, a massive stone frame located east of Purandara Mantapa. A stone beam rests on two stone pillars. According to legend, the generous kings of Vijayanagara would weigh themselves with gold and gems to distribute among the poor.
The tour includes a visit to the Royal Enclosures, featuring memorable structures such as the Elephant Stables, Queen’s Bath, and the Lotus Mahal. The Zanana Enclosure, the area designated for royal women, is another captivating site.
