Chua Tran Quoc - The first stop is Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in the city, rich in history. Situated as a sacred “gem” in the middle of West Lake, this religious site is perfect for cultural enthusiasts visiting Vietnam’s capital.
With a history spanning 1,500 years, Tran Quoc Pagoda is Hanoi’s oldest pagoda. It was constructed in 541 during the Early Ly Dynasty and was initially named Khai Quoc Pagoda. Originally located near the Red River, it was moved to Yen Phu dyke in the Kim Nguu mound area in 1615 after a dyke collapse. The pagoda was renamed Tran Quoc during King Le Hy Tong’s reign (1681 - 1705) with hopes that it would help people ward off natural disasters and bring peace. The name “Tran Quoc” remains today. During the Tran Dynasty, it was considered the capital of Buddhism and is now an iconic symbol of Hanoi.
-
Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum - The next stop is Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Ba Dinh Square, one of Hanoi’s most visited attractions. It is the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s most iconic leader, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Ho’. His body is preserved in a glass case here, despite his wishes. Visiting Uncle Ho’s resting place offers a unique historical experience. The mausoleum, constructed in 1973 and opened to the public in 1975, was modeled after Lenin’s mausoleum in Russia. Visitors should dress respectfully (no shorts, sleeveless shirts, or miniskirts) and must deposit bags and cameras before entering. Uncle Ho’s remains are sent to Russia annually for maintenance, so the mausoleum is usually closed from October onwards.
-
One Pillar Pagoda - Officially known as Dien Huu Pagoda, the One Pillar Pagoda is named for its unique architecture: the entire structure is built on a single pillar in the middle of a lotus pond. Located in Ba Dinh District, it is within walking distance of the Ho Chi Minh Complex, including Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and Ho Chi Minh Museum. Believed to have existed since the Ly Dynasty, the pagoda marks a significant development in Vietnamese Buddhism. It is both a popular tourist attraction and a religious site for local pilgrims.
-
Hoa Lo Prison - Just a few minutes from the Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel, Hoa Lo Prison, also known as “Hanoi Hilton” and “Maison Centrale”, is a historical site in Hanoi’s French Quarter. Originally built by French colonists in 1896 to imprison and torture Vietnamese revolutionaries, it was one of the largest and most brutal prison complexes in Indochina. Later, it housed US prisoners of war (POWs), who called it the “Hanoi Hilton“. In the 1990s, most of the prison was demolished, but a section has been preserved and turned into a museum, making it one of Hanoi’s top attractions.
