Journey to the Heart of the Sahara

The allure of the Sahara Desert has always been irresistible to me. As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, the vast, undulating dunes and the promise of adventure beckoned me to Hassilabied. I embarked on the Sahara Desert Luxury Camp experience, eager to blend my love for nature with the thrill of exploration.

Our journey began in the early morning, setting off from Fes towards the desert. The drive was a visual feast, with the Middle Atlas and Higher Atlas mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. Our first stop was Ifran, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco,” where the crisp air and charming architecture offered a refreshing pause. As we continued, the landscape transformed, hinting at the desert’s proximity. The cedar forests of Azrou were a delightful surprise, where we encountered the playful Barbarian apes, a moment that reminded me of the importance of preserving such unique ecosystems.

Arriving in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, we were greeted with the traditional mint tea, a gesture of hospitality that set the tone for the rest of our adventure. Our adventure included a visit to the Fossiles d’Erfoud, where we marveled at the ancient remnants of life that once thrived in this arid landscape. We also had the opportunity to engage in more exhilarating activities, such as ATV rides across the dunes, which added a thrilling twist to our journey.

As we made our way back to Fes, the journey was filled with laughter and camaraderie, our guide sharing stories and insights into Morocco’s vibrant culture. We stopped to pick roses, learn about the production of Argan oil, and even visited iconic filming locations, each stop a reminder of the diverse beauty of this incredible country.
