Devil’s Dyke National Trust - This 300-foot-deep valley was formed by massive water flow off the Downs during the last Ice Age, when melting snow and frozen chalk prevented absorption. Erosion was furthered by the freeze-thaw cycle, deepening the valley through the movement of saturated chalk. The V-shaped dry valley of Devil’s Dyke is a result of solifluction and river erosion. Over 14,000 years ago, the area experienced a very cold climate, though not glacial. Snowfields covered the South Downs, and permafrost conditions kept the chalk permanently frozen. In summer, melting snow saturated the topsoil, unable to penetrate the frozen chalk beneath. Waterlogged material above the permafrost slid down, removing material by friction and exposing deeper frozen chalk layers.
Visit the Devils Dyke Pub for a refreshment. - The Shepherd & Dog, Fulking - Pause at the Shepherd and Dog Pub. The main building began as two or possibly three cottages. Its use as a public house likely started in the early 1800s, listed as ‘Shepherd & Dog’ in the 1841 census. It is believed to have been named after the annual sheep washing in the nearby stream, as described by Nathaniel Paine Blaker in his memoir of a childhood in Fulking in the mid-19th century. He notes the pub’s importance as a place for shepherds to warm up after hours in the cold water.
In the early 19th century, Sussex was famous for smuggling (Blaker includes a brief chapter on this), and the pub was used to store contraband. It appears that goods were first taken up the outside steps and then lowered through a hidden opening into a large cavity below.
