Giza Great Pyramids, Sphinx, and Saqqara
Pyramids of Giza - Meet your guide at your hotel to start your tour. Today, explore the Giza Plateau, including the Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, along with the iconic Sphinx. Discover the only remaining ancient wonder, Khufu’s pyramid, and explore its interior. Learn about the history, construction, and purpose of these magnificent pyramids.
Step Pyramid of Djoser - Travel from the Great Pyramids of Giza to Saqqara, one of Egypt’s most significant and wealthiest necropolises. Located about 20km south of the Giza Plateau, Saqqara served as the cemetery for Memphis, the first capital of United Egypt in 3200 BCE. Spanning approximately 22km from north to south and 7km from east to west, Saqqara is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the first pyramid in human history. Transfer back to your hotel.
Fly to Aswan - Aswan Tour - Felucca Cruise
Aswan High Dam - Transfer from your hotel to Cairo Airport for your flight to Aswan, where your felucca Nile cruise begins. Meet your guide outside the arrival terminal at Aswan Airport to start your tour. Your first stop is the High Dam of Aswan, a remarkable engineering achievement of the twentieth century, built to conserve water and protect Egypt from the Nile’s floods.
Since ancient times, the Nile has been the lifeblood of Egypt. Annual floods, lasting at least four months, could be either devastating or insufficient, leading to famine. Controlling the Nile’s floodwaters has been a goal since the time of the pharaohs.
Temple of Philae - Continue from the High Dam to Philae Temple, also known as the Temple of Isis, located on Philae Island in Aswan. Known as the “Pearl of Egypt,” the temple requires a short boat ride to reach. Philae Island was a center for the popular cult of Isis, where the goddess’s image was ferried to Bigah every ten days for a symbolic reunion with her husband Osiris.
Unfinished Obelisk - Conclude your tour at the Granite Quarry of the Unfinished Obelisk. The obelisks of Egypt are among the most recognized monuments of ancient civilizations, admired for their size, elegance, polish, and decoration. Marvel at the ancient Egyptians’ skill in creating such wonders with primitive techniques. Transfer to your felucca cruise to set sail, enjoying the scenic Nile landscape in Aswan. Lunch and dinner are served on board, with a peaceful night stop on the riverbank.
Kom Ombo - Edfu - Luxor
Temple of Kom Ombo - After breakfast and disembarkation, drive to Kom Ombo to visit the twin Temple of Horus and Sobek, along with the Crocodile Museum. The temple is dedicated to the two triads of Horus and Sobek. The right side honors Sobek (the Crocodile deity), his consort Hathor, and their son Khonsu, while the left side is dedicated to Horus the Elder, his consort Tasenetnofret, and their son Panebtawy.
Drive from Kom Ombo to Edfu to visit the Temple of Horus.
Temple of Horus - The Temple of Horus in Edfu is remarkably well-preserved, with all elements intact except for the Sacred Lake and two obelisks. The Sacred Lake, once on the temple’s east side, is now beneath modern houses. The obelisks once stood before the main gate. The Temple of Edfu is richly adorned with reliefs and hieroglyphs on its walls. Enjoy a brief tour of the temple before driving to your hotel in Luxor.
Luxor Highlights
Valley of the Kings - After breakfast at the hotel, visit the magnificent Valley of the Kings, a highlight not only of Luxor but of all Egypt. Known as (Ta-Iset-Ma’at), meaning “the Place of Truth,” it served as the necropolis for the great pharaohs of the 18th to 20th Dynasties (1550-1080 BCE). Tuthmosis I was the first pharaoh buried here, and Ramses XI was the last.
Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - From the Valley of the Kings, proceed to Hatshepsut Temple. Through her building projects, Hatshepsut secured divine favor and prosperity for herself and her people, proving her capability as a ruler. More a patron of the arts than a military leader, she commissioned a funerary monument for her father Tuthmosis I and herself, choosing a valley already sacred to the goddess Hathor. Later, the monument became a Christian convent, preserving the pharaonic temple from further destruction.
Colossi of Memnon - Continue from Hatshepsut Temple to the Colossi of Memnon. In the vast plain around western Thebes, between the Nile and the Valley of the Kings, lie the remains of the monumental road leading to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple. The Colossi of Memnon are all that remain of what was once the largest mortuary temple on Luxor’s west bank, destroyed by floods and later by Ramses II and his son Merenptah, who repurposed the blocks for their own temples.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
Temple of Karnak - After lunch, visit the impressive Karnak Temple. The Karnak Complex was the chief sanctuary of the great god and is larger than any other monument in Egypt. Located about 3km north of Luxor Temple, this vast complex, containing many separate temples, spans 1700 years of expansion and covers 300 acres. Its giant architraves, columns, and wall reliefs record its growth from a modest Middle Kingdom shrine to a magnificent temple, all dedicated to honoring the god Amun-Re.
Luxor Temple - Conclude your tour at the majestic Luxor Temple. Built by the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III and expanded by the 19th Dynasty pharaoh Ramses II, the temple was further enriched by Tutankhamun, Horemhab, and Alexander the Great with reliefs, inscriptions, and minor buildings. Transfer to Luxor Airport for your flight back to Cairo, and then transfer to your hotel in Cairo.
Egyptian Museum, Saladin Citadel, and Khan El-Khalili
Egyptian Museum - After breakfast at your hotel, visit the stunning Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, one of the world’s largest and most important museums. Housing over 120,000 pieces from all periods of Ancient Egyptian history, the museum was designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon and built by an Italian company in 1902 during Khedive Abbas Helmi II’s reign. The museum’s two floors feature heavy stone pieces, giant statues, sarcophagi, and coffins, with its design influenced by Manetho’s classification of Egyptian history.
From the Egyptian Museum, proceed to the Citadel of Saladin.
Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Saladin is a must-visit during your stay in Cairo. Built by Saladin to defend against the Crusaders, it served as the government seat until the British occupation in 1882. Perched on a steep hill 75 meters above Cairo’s eastern side, the citadel overlooks Salah Ad-Din Square, once home to a medieval horse market, sword-makers, bazaar, and hippodrome.
From the citadel, head to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar.
Khan Al-Khalili - Conclude your tour at Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, the largest and one of the oldest bazaars in the Middle East. Known for its labyrinthine layout, Khan El-Khalili is Cairo’s most famous tourist market, bordered by Sayyidna Al-Hussein to the east and Muski Street to the south. Although often used interchangeably, Khan and Muski are two distinct adjoining bazaar areas.
Transfer back to your hotel.
Fly Home
Cairo International Airport - Conclude your one-week Egyptian tour with a transfer to Cairo Airport for your departure. Though it’s sad to leave, be sure to ask the guides about your next Egyptian adventure.
