Pyramids of Giza - The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are not only top attractions in Egypt but are also must-see ancient monuments. The Great Pyramids and the Sphinx are among the most renowned ancient sites globally and the only remaining wonders of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. A visit to Egypt is incomplete without seeing the Pyramids of Giza. Even if you’ve visited Egypt multiple times, the Pyramids and the Sphinx at the base of the Giza plateau are iconic images of Egypt. Don’t forget to capture a photo in front of them.

Step Pyramid of Djoser - The most prominent landmark of Saqqara is the Step Pyramid, the tomb of the Third Dynasty ruler Djoser, constructed by Imhotep. It is considered the earliest major stone structure in Egypt. The pyramid’s form evolved from the large mastabas (mud-brick tombs) of the First and Second Dynasties, with six steps created by adding successive layers of masonry. Standing 60 meters high, it is built from locally quarried clay sandstone. Entry is no longer permitted due to safety concerns. The pyramid’s chambers and passages were used for the burial of the King’s close relatives and for storing grave goods.

Memphis and Saqqara - Memphis was the ancient capital of Aneb-Hetch, the first nome of Lower Egypt. Its ruins, near Mit Rahina, feature the largest statue made by man, the great statue of King Ramses II, and the alabaster sphinx of Queen Hatshepsut.

Grand Egyptian Museum - Located near the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum is one of the world’s largest and most impressive archaeological museums. It houses over 100,000 artifacts from Egypt’s history, from prehistoric times to the Greco-Roman era. The museum’s highlight is the complete collection of Tutankhamun, displayed together for the first time. Visitors can also admire colossal statues, royal mummies, intricate jewelry, and beautifully carved reliefs. The modern architecture, glass façade, and Grand Staircase offer stunning views of the pyramids.

Coptic Cairo - Coptic Cairo is part of Old Cairo, encompassing the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, and many other Coptic churches and historical sites.

Cairo Citadel - The Saladin Citadel of Cairo is a medieval Islamic fortification located on Mokattam Hill near Cairo’s center. It was once renowned for its fresh breeze and grand city views and is now a preserved historic site.

Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili is a major market in the historic center of Islamic Cairo. The bazaar district is a main attraction for both tourists and Egyptians.

Luxor Museum - This museum features a well-curated and brilliantly displayed collection of antiquities from the end of the Old Kingdom to the Mamluk period, mostly from Theban temples and necropolis. Despite the ticket price, it is one of Luxor’s most rewarding sights and one of Egypt’s best museums.

Mummification Museum - The Mummification Museum offers well-presented exhibits on the art of mummification. It displays the well-preserved mummy of a 21st-dynasty high priest of Amun, Maserharti, and various mummified animals. Exhibits include tools and materials used in mummification, such as a small spoon and metal spatula for brain removal. Artifacts crucial to the mummy’s journey to the afterlife and picturesque painted coffins are also featured. A beautiful statue of Anubis, the god of embalming, presides over the entrance.

Temple of Karnak - Karnak Temple is a vast complex in Luxor dedicated primarily to Amun, dating back to 2000 BC. It is an impressive sight, second only to the Great Pyramids in popularity.

Luxor Temple - Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex on the east bank of the Nile River in Luxor, constructed around 1400 BCE. In Egyptian, it is known as ipet resyt, “the southern sanctuary.”

Valley of the Kings & the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

Valley of the Kings - The Valley of the Kings is the ancient burial ground of many New Kingdom Pharaohs. It is a truly impressive site, featuring Tutankhamun’s tomb, discovered almost intact in 1922, and the tomb of Ramses IV, among others. A ticket allows access to 3 of the 63 tombs, excluding Tutankhamun’s. The tombs have suffered from treasure hunters, floods, and mass tourism, affecting the reliefs and pigments of the wall paintings. The Ministry of Antiquities has installed dehumidifiers and glass screens in the worst-affected tombs and introduced a rotation system for public access while restoring others.

Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the first lady of ancient Egypt, is a unique structure consisting of three floors cut into the cliffs of the Valley of the Kings. Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for about 16 years after her brother-husband Thutmose II. She built this temple as a funerary temple and ruled as a male king because women were not allowed to rule Egypt. She married her stepson Thutmose III, who later became king and destroyed her monuments as an act of revenge. Her mummy was discovered in the Egyptian Museum storerooms and is now displayed in the Mummy room.

Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned during the 18th Dynasty. They have stood in the Theban Necropolis, west of the Nile River from modern Luxor, for 3,400 years.

Temple of Horus - This Ptolemaic temple, built between 237 and 57 BC, is one of Egypt’s best-preserved ancient monuments. Preserved by desert sand after the pagan cult was banned, the temple is dedicated to Horus, the avenging son of Isis and Osiris. With its roof intact, it is one of the most atmospheric ancient buildings.

Temple of Kom Ombo - The Temple of Kom Ombo is a unique double temple in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt. Constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty, 180–47 BC, the southern half is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility and creator of the world with Hathor and Khonsu.

Aswan - Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel Temple Complex - The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples in Abu Simbel, a village in Nubia, Upper Egypt, near the Sudan border. They are located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan.
