- Central Library Oodi - A remarkable venue, Oodi is Helsinki’s new Central Library and a vibrant meeting place. It offers a wide array of services and facilities to residents every day of the week, from early morning until late evening. Oodi serves as a communal living room, situated in the heart of Helsinki.
- Huvilakatu - Known for its Jugend style architecture, this street features some of the most beautiful and expensive buildings in Helsinki.
- Kaivopuisto - Located at the tip of the Helsinki peninsula, Kaivopuisto is one of the city’s oldest and most beloved parks. The surrounding streets form a residential area with about 500 inhabitants, featuring historic villas and several embassies, earning it the reputation of a diplomatic district.
The rocky peninsula was once covered in untouched forest and swamps. In the 1830s, a high-society spa opened with a renovated park, providing a retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. Today, Kaivopuisto, or “Kaivari,” caters to the leisure needs of local residents and the entire metropolitan area. The largest annual event is the May Day picnic, attracting tens of thousands of Helsinkians to celebrate the coming summer, regardless of the weather, which can range from sunny to stormy. In Finland, May Day combines labor day traditions with an urban carnival atmosphere.
- Sibelius Park - Named after Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius, on his 80th birthday in 1945, the park’s main attraction is the Sibelius Monument, designed by Eila Hiltunen.
- Old Market Hall - Since 1889, the Old Market Hall in Helsinki has been serving customers with a variety of goods, including cheese, fish, shellfish, vegetables, fruits, cakes, spices, coffee, and tea. The merchants are also eager to assist with special orders.
- Senate Square - The Senate Square and its surroundings offer a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. Dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel (1778-1840): Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland. A statue of Alexander II (1894) stands at the center of the square. Helsinki Cathedral is arguably Finland’s most iconic and photographed building. The oldest stone building in Helsinki, the Sederholm House, is located on the southeast corner of the square and currently houses the Helsinki City Museum. The Esplanade park and the Market Square are just a block away. The Senate Square also features a sound installation called the Sound of the Senate Square, a modern take on the European glockenspiel, heard daily at 17:49 as it travels from one building to another. The composition, lasting 5 minutes and 18 seconds, is by Harri Viitanen and Jyrki Alakuijala.
- Temppeliaukio Church - Carved directly into solid rock, the Temppeliaukio Church is located in the heart of Helsinki, at the end of Fredrikinkatu. Its unique architecture, completed in 1969, makes it a major attraction in Helsinki. The church hall is topped with a dome lined with copper, supported by reinforced concrete beams on the rock walls. The interior features rugged rock and rubble walls. Before noon, light filters through the windows surrounding the roof, illuminating the altar wall, where an ice-age crevice serves as the altarpiece. Renowned for its excellent acoustics, the church is a popular concert venue.
