- Dia - Dia is an uninhabited island located 6 miles north of Heraklion, known for its pristine waters, stunning wild landscapes, and rich historical background. According to legend, Zeus created a monster to destroy the Cretans, but later transformed it into stone to save them. In the bay of Saint George, where anchoring occurs, there once stood an ancient Minoan port that was destroyed along with the Minoan Civilization. Occasionally, ancient ruins and artifacts can be discovered at the beach’s bottom. Today, a beautiful Christian church featuring Aegean architecture graces the island. Dia is home to various wildlife species, including rabbits, kri-kri goats, and hawks, and there is also a chance to encounter dolphins while sailing to the island!
- Castello del Molo (Koules) - Initially fortified by the Arabs in the 9th or 10th centuries, the site later featured a tower known as Castellum Comunis during the second Byzantine period. Although an earthquake destroyed the tower in 1303, it was subsequently repaired. In 1462, the Venetian Senate approved a plan to enhance Candia’s fortifications. The Byzantine tower was demolished in 1523, paving the way for the construction of Castello a Mare, which was completed in 1540. By 1630, the fort was equipped with 18 cannons on the ground floor and 25 cannons on the roof pathway. During the 21-year Siege of Candia, Ottoman forces easily neutralized the fort’s defenses. The Ottomans captured the fort in 1669 after the Venetians surrendered the city. They made minimal changes to the fort, adding only some battlements and embrasures. A small fort called Little Koules was built on the landward side but was demolished in 1936.
