Matala is a secure natural harbor located 65 kilometers from Heraklion, nestled in the Bay of Messara. It boasts a gently curving sandy beach where, according to legend, Zeus came ashore disguised as a bull with Europa on his back. The beach stretches 250 meters in length and 45 meters in width.

Matala offers something for everyone. It has grown into a popular tourist spot while maintaining the charm of a tranquil fishing village. Its history dates back to the early 20th century, and the spirit of the 1960s and 70s hippie lifestyle still lingers.

Rich in history, Matala is one of over 400 beaches in Greece awarded the prestigious Blue Flag. This eco-label is granted to beaches that meet high standards of cleanliness, safe swimming areas, and strict criteria for water quality, environmental management, and safety. The beach is equipped with a lifeguard, first aid facilities, toilets, and showers.

The beaches of Matala are part of Natura 2000, a European Union network dedicated to nature conservation.
