Embark on a remarkable journey through the Samaria Gorge, the largest in Europe, stretching approximately 18 kilometers. This adventure offers not only stunning views and diverse wildlife but also a personal challenge.
Nestled in the heart of the magnificent “White Mountains,” south of the Omalos plateau, the Samaria Gorge trail begins at an elevation of 1250 meters above sea level. The path, equipped with wooden fences, descends the mountainside. The most narrow and arguably the most scenic spot is known as “Portes” or gates, where towering cliffs reach 500 meters high, while the gorge narrows to just 3-4 meters wide. The river Tarraios, flowing through the White Mountains and valley, is crossed by 47 bridges. Along the way, visitors may encounter the reserve’s residents, such as the wild Kri-Kri goats, or spot rare orchid species.
After a 4-6 hour trek, the journey concludes at the stunning Agia Roumeli beach, where visitors can enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters and have lunch. A boat will then transport them back to the bus.
