Cooking, Culture, and Crabs: A Day in Hội An’s Culinary Heart
Eager to immerse myself in the local culture of Hội An, I booked the Hoi An Eco Cooking Class. From exploring a bustling market to a serene basket boat ride and hands-on cooking, this experience promised a deep dive into Vietnamese cuisine and rural life.
A Market Adventure
Arriving in Hội An, I was eager to dive into the local culture and cuisine. The Hoi An Eco Cooking Class seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that. Our day began with a guided walk through a bustling local market. The vibrant colors and enticing aromas of fresh produce and spices were a feast for the senses. As we navigated the crowded aisles, our guide shared insights into the unique properties of various ingredients, sparking my curiosity and appetite. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way, and I couldn’t wait to see how these ingredients would transform into delicious dishes.
A Journey on Water
After the market, we embarked on a basket boat ride through the serene waterways of Cam Thanh fishing village. This was a chance to connect with the local way of life, as we joined fishermen in their traditional round boats. The experience of paddling through the coconut forest and trying our hand at catching crabs was both thrilling and peaceful. It was a reminder of the simple joys of life and the beauty of nature. The gentle sway of the boat and the laughter of fellow travelers made this part of the day truly memorable.
Cooking Up a Storm
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the cooking session. Under the expert guidance of Kien Nguyen and his friendly staff, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. The kitchen was alive with activity, and the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and excitement. We learned to prepare six authentic Vietnamese dishes, each one a masterpiece of flavor and texture. From making rice paper to crafting fresh spring rolls and crispy pancakes, every step was a revelation. The staff’s patience and encouragement made the process enjoyable and rewarding. As we sat down to enjoy our creations, I felt a sense of accomplishment and connection to the culture of Hội An. The recipe book we received was a thoughtful touch, allowing us to bring a piece of this experience home with us.
