- Saijo - Upon arrival, visitors will proceed to Saijo Honmachi Historical Square, where a guide will share historical insights about the town and its recognition as one of Japan’s “Sake Capitals.” Following this, there will be a short walk through Saijo Sake Brewery Street. As the name suggests, this street is flanked by breweries, many of which date back to the early 20th century. Visitors can admire the distinctive architecture of these buildings, featuring white grid walls and red chimneys.
As guests wander through the streets, the guide will help them imagine life in Saijo as it began to thrive and grow in the 1900s. There will also be visits to two breweries to learn about (and taste!) the sake brewing process, including the various techniques and steps involved.
The town’s location offers ideal natural conditions, making it a perfect place for sake brewing.
- Saikokuji Temple - Upon reaching Saikokuji Temple, visitors will first encounter the unique Niomon Gate, renowned for its straw sandals of various sizes, placed here as prayers for healthy legs. From this point, they will ascend 108 stone steps to reach the Main Hall of the temple. These steps are particularly breathtaking in spring when the Sakura trees on both sides create a stunning tunnel of pink blossoms.
At the top, the guide will offer a tour of the temple grounds, explaining the history and fundamentals of Japanese Buddhism. Visitors will learn about the religion’s introduction to the country and its contemporary practices.
- Senkoji & Senkoji Park - The final stop of the tour is the iconic Senkoji Temple, one of Onomichi’s most renowned landmarks. This magnificent temple, founded in the 9th century, is easily identified by its vermillion Main Hall situated on the hillside. Enshrined within this hall is Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, whom people pray to for various reasons such as good health, traffic safety, finding a partner, and more. The aroma of incense, the breathtaking city view, and the surrounding nature combine to create an unforgettable experience. Guests will have the chance to pray, purchase amulets, and briefly explore the temple grounds and its surrounding area independently.
