• Capitania Puerto Deportivo de Hondarribia - The first stop is the fishing port of Hondarribia, where the history of local sailors, pirates, and explorers is explored to understand the deep connection between the Basques and the sea. Participants will also delve into ancient fishing traditions and discover favorite seafood delicacies.
• Marina Arriba Monte - The journey continues to the fishermen’s village of Marina, where the elderly gather on benches along the lively San Pedro Street, filled with bustling pintxo bars. The colorful buildings along this promenade were once old fish markets and fishermen’s huts. Marina is the perfect spot to pause for a drink - ‘topa’ (cheers)!
• Muralla de Hondarribia - From Marina, enjoy a pleasant walk to the fortified part of Hondarribia, which has been the backdrop for some of the Basque Country’s most glorious battles. Its narrow streets, flower-adorned balconies, and medieval charm create an extraordinary atmosphere and cultural context. There is also time to discover a hidden collection of tapestries by Rubens in the castle of Emperor Charles V.
• Historic Center of Hondarribia - Prepare to indulge in the secretive Basque gastronomic society! Known as ‘Txokos’ in Euskara, these are not just places to cook and eat but play a vital role in social life. Guests will be welcomed by a friend and excellent chef, Fernando, who has been passionate about cooking since childhood. Fernando will prepare an authentic Basque dinner using the finest products from the local garden and fishing port visited earlier. Plates will be filled with delicious anchovies, Basque tomato salad with home-marinated tuna, baked monkfish, and ‘pantxineta’ - a dessert of vanilla custard, puff pastry, and roasted almonds! The gastronomic society offers a unique opportunity to engage in local culture - cooking, eating, singing, and laughing as if you were Basque for a day!
