Montane Mansion is a remarkable architectural structure in Quarry Bay, consisting of five interconnected buildings forming an E-shaped complex centered around a courtyard. This massive structure is a residential complex, but the apartment units are small, offering a true sense of the city’s density when standing in the courtyard. Each small patio is adorned with wet laundry hanging to dry, lounge chairs for sunbathing, and flowerpots, a common feature of local housing throughout Hong Kong. The building’s rainbow-colored facade adds vibrancy and liveliness, making it a favorite among photographers for years and increasingly popular with tourists. It has also become a sought-after filming location for Hollywood blockbusters, with “Transformer IV” being the most famous.
- Chun Yeung Street - The tour continues with a “ding ding” ride to North Point, where guests will explore the Chun Yeung Street market. This market retains a local charm where residents still shop today. Local stores line both sides of this narrow street, selling fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and live seafood. A unique feature is the tram that runs through, causing everyone to pause and wait until it passes.
- North Point - Visit a family-run Chinese embroidery slippers store, one of the last few “hand-made Chinese embroidery slippers” stores in Hong Kong, established in 1960. They are committed to offering “Made in Hong Kong” products. (This is to explain the history of Hong Kong, not a designated shopping stop.)
- Causeway Bay - The tour proceeds with another “ding ding” ride to “Goose Neck Bridge” in the bustling area of Causeway Bay. Here, guests can experience the cultural ritual of “petty person beating,” where “beaters” help people eliminate their enemies and misfortune. This practice is popular in Hong Kong, where “petty persons” are believed to bring bad luck or cause harm. When people cannot express their anger or hatred towards these “petty persons,” they hire beaters to strike a “human portrait” (representing the petty persons) and perform a series of steps to prevent further harassment.
- Causeway Bay - After the walking tour, it’s time to relax. Guests will be taken to a family-run traditional noodle shop to enjoy wonton noodles and broth. “Wonton” is a Cantonese term for bite-sized dumplings stuffed with shrimp and pork, served with noodles and immersed in aromatic chicken broth.
At the end of the tour, the guide will direct guests to the nearest entrance of Causeway Bay MTR station. Alternatively, guests are welcome to stay and explore the area on their own.
