While it may not be as renowned as the Samaria Gorge, it is certainly worth visiting due to its stunning scenery, including several spectacularly narrow sections. • Frangokastello Beach - Frangokastello is among Crete’s most famous beaches, celebrated for its local Venetian castle and the legendary Drosoulites ghosts. Positioned 13 km east of Chora Sfakion and 79 km southeast of Chania, it is nestled in a small valley south of Crete’s White Mountains. Constructed by the Venetians between 1371 and 1374, the castle served as a regional garrison, featuring a simple rectangular shape with towers at each corner and a main gate. According to legend, the shadows of armed Greek soldiers who perished in the Battle of Frangokastello on May 17, 1828, appear to march towards the fortress at dawn. These apparitions, known as Drosoulites or dew-men, are visible annually on the battle’s anniversary or even in early June.
