The town held significant strategic and commercial importance at the fringes of Central Europe for many centuries. Sighișoara emerged as one of Transylvania’s key urban centers, attracting artisans from across the Holy Roman Empire.
German artisans and craftsmen were pivotal in the urban economy and in constructing the fortifications that safeguarded it. It is believed that during the 16th and 17th centuries, Sighișoara boasted as many as 15 guilds and 20 handicraft branches.
